Start Here (Choose Your Path)

Best Start for Younger Readers (Middle Grade / Early Teen)

Start with The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches. This entry path introduces the world in a clear, accessible way while still delivering the epic scope Ruin Mist is known for.

Best Start for Teen & Adult Epic Fantasy Readers

Start with Keeper Martin’s Tale (often collected in the Ruin Mist Chronicles). This path is lore-rich, political, and sweeping—perfect if you want the full “chronicle” experience.

Best Start if You Want Dragons Early

Start with In the Service of Dragons. This entry puts you closer to the ancient powers shaping the world and moves quickly into high-stakes alliances.

Not sure?

If you want the “classic” Ruin Mist experience: Keeper Martin’s Tale.
If you’re reading with a younger reader: The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches.

Recommended Reading Orders

1) Adult Epic Fantasy Path (Ruin Mist Chronicles)

This is the most popular “chronicle” path for adult readers and lore lovers:

  1. Keeper Martin’s Tale
  2. Kingdom Alliance
  3. Fields of Honor
  4. Mark of the Dragon

2) Kids/Teens Path (Accessible Entry)

This path is often recommended as an on-ramp for younger readers:

  1. The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches (Books 1–4)
  2. In the Service of Dragons (Books 1–4)
  3. Guardians of the Dragon Realms (Books 1–3)

3) “Dragons First” Path

If you want a faster line toward ancient powers, gates, and dragon politics:

  1. In the Service of Dragons (Books 1–4)
  2. Guardians of the Dragon Realms (Books 1–3)
  3. Ruin Mist Chronicles (Keeper Martin’s Tale → Mark of the Dragon)

Note: Some titles exist in multiple editions (single volumes, revised editions, and omnibuses). If you’ve purchased a boxed set or omnibus, you may already have multiple books combined into one.

Publication Order vs. Chronological Order

Ruin Mist is built as a layered history—multiple viewpoints, contested memory, and “lost ages” revealed over time. Because of that, some readers prefer publication order (discovering history as it unfolds), while others prefer a more linear chronology.

Our recommendation for first-time readers is to follow one of the three paths above. Once you’re in the world, then explore alternate orders.

Ruin Mist Primer (No Spoilers)

Ruin Mist unfolds across three realms—Middle-Earth, Under-Earth, and Over-Earth—once connected by ancient gates. The present age is shaped by a long war, the outlawing of magic, and the way nations retell history to survive.

If you enjoy fantasy that treats history as memory—where “truth” depends on who is speaking—you’re in the right place. For a deeper lore entry, visit Exploring Ruin Mist.
